Detailed Content:

The Counselor has been rated 15 for strong bloody violence, gore, strong language and sex references.

This film some scenes of strong bloody violence.  In one of the strongest scenes of violence, a device (a length of wire attached to a motor) is thrown over a man’s head.  The motor is activated and we watch as the wire consricts around the man’s throat.  After some struggling, we see him fall to the floor and the wire cut into his neck (severing several fingers as he struggles to break free and causing blood to spray from his neck).  Whilst disturbing and bloody, the fact this is a fictional device and the most gory moments (blood spraying from his neck) are kept relitively brief led us to believe this scene was generally suitable for most older teenagers.  In another scene, we see a biker decapitated by a length of wire which has been strug up across a road.  Whilst there is no emphasis on detail, we later see a man remove his severed head from his bikers helmet (this scene is gory but brief).  In further scenes we see people shot, resulting in some bloody spray.  In one case a man is shot through the head, resulting in blood spraying across the screen.  Again, whilst bloody, these scenes are brief.

The film also contains occasional use of  strong language (e.g. “fuck”).

In addition, there are also occasional strong sex references throughout the film.  In one scene, a couple lay beneath some bed sheets.  The woman describes what she’d like her partner to do to her and goes into some detail.  Oral sex is also strongly implyed, but with no visual detail.  In another scene, we see a woman climb onto a car windshield, spread her legs and begin thrusting back and forth.  Whilst there is little visual detail, a man (present at the time) later describes what her vagina looked like as he watched from within the car.  There are also various other references to other sex acts, some of which are crude.   Whilst strong, none of these references were thought to go beyond what would be considered suitable for older teenage viewers.

Finally, the film also contains some drug references.  All are mild in nature and are in reference to drug trafficing.

Overall, The Counselor should pose no real issues for older teenage viewers but does contain some strong adult content.  Due to scenes of strong bloody violence, gore, strong language and sexual content, we do not recommend this film for anyone under the age of 15.
